Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP): A High-Performance Halogen-Free Flame Retardant

As a leading supplier of flame retardants and related services, Alfa Chemistry offers ammonium polyphosphate (APP), a widely used, halogen-free, inorganic flame retardant known for its high phosphorus and nitrogen content, excellent thermal stability, and environmental safety. APP appears as a white powder and plays a critical role in intumescent systems and thermoset resin formulations, delivering superior flame resistance without emitting toxic gases or smoke. Its versatility makes it ideal for a wide array of applications, including intumescent fireproof coatings and thermosetting resins, and epoxy resin. Beyond these, APP effectively flame-retards fibers, wood, and various rubber-plastic products.

Flame Retardant Mechanism

APP functions through a condensed-phase flame retardant mechanism, involving multiple synergistic steps:

  • Thermal Decomposition: At 250-280 °C, APP thermally decomposes to release ammonia (NH3) and polyphosphoric acid (H3PO4), an endothermic process that absorbs heat and cools the material surface.
  • Char Formation: The resulting polyphosphoric acid promotes dehydration of polymer surfaces, producing phosphate esters that degrade into a stable, foamed carbonaceous char layer, which physically isolates the substrate from oxygen and heat.
  • Gas Dilution: NH3 and other inert gases released during decomposition reduce oxygen concentration near the burning zone, inhibiting combustion.
  • Barrier Effect: The protective char acts as a thermal and physical barrier, significantly delaying fire spread and structural degradation.

Applications of Aluminum Diethylphosphinate (ADP)

As a highly efficient halogen-free flame retardant, APP is indispensable across diverse sectors:

  • Plastics Industry: Widely used in polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), APP enhances the flame retardancy of plastics without compromising their physical or mechanical properties.
  • Coatings and Coverings: APP is a vital ingredient in intumescent fireproof coatings. When exposed to heat, these coatings expand to create an insulating foam layer, safeguarding substrates from flame exposure. This makes them ideal for the fire protection of buildings, cables, and wooden structures.
  • Rubber and Elastomers: APP improves the fire resistance and safety of various natural and synthetic rubbers.
  • Textiles: It is also effectively employed in the flame retardant treatment of textiles, particularly in fireproof coatings for wood and metals.
  • Polyurethane Foams: In rigid polyurethane foams, APP ensures superior flame retardancy, excellent dimensional stability, and enhanced hydrolysis resistance, making it a key component for these materials.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages

  • Halogen-Free & Eco-Friendly: Non-toxic, non-corrosive, and smoke-suppressing.
  • High Thermal Stability: Suitable for high-temperature processing environments.
  • Cost-Efficient: Mature manufacturing process and widely available raw materials.
  • Effective Synergist: Excellent performance in combination with other intumescent additives.

Limitations

  • Moisture Sensitivity: Especially for untreated grades, which can absorb humidity and affect dispersion.
  • Low Compatibility: It may require surface modification for better dispersion in organic matrices.
  • Higher Loading Requirements: It may impact mechanical properties when used in large quantities.
  • Water Solubility: It can limit application in aqueous formulations unless surface-treated.
