Effect of Iron Hydroxide on Smoke Suppression Performance of Intumescent Flame Retardant Silicone Rubber Composites

To improve the flame retardancy of silicone rubber (SR), novel silicone rubber (SR) based hybrid materials containing intumescent flame retardant (IFR) and iron hydroxide (FeOOH) were developed.
· Preparation of samples
The raw materials required for sample preparation include silicone rubber (SR, viscosity: 7,000-12,000 mpa.s, 25 °C), fumed silica (specific surface area of 150 m2 g-1, average particle size of 14 nm, modified with silane coupling agent KH-550), IFR (synthesized based on phosphoric acid, melamine and pentaerythritol), ethyl silicate (ES), dibutyltin dilaurate (DD), and ferric hydroxide (FeOOH). The specific formula is shown in Table 1.
· Synergistic Effect of FeOOH and IFR
The results from the cone calorimeter test (CCT) show that the SR/IFR/FeOOH sample containing 4.0 mass% FeOOH exhibited the lowest heat release rate (HRR), smoke production rate (SPR), total smoke release (TSR), total heat release (THR), and smoke formation (SF) among all samples tested. Photographs provide strong evidence of a synergistic effect between IFR and FeOOH. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) indicates that FeOOH enhances the thermal stability of the SR/IFR/FeOOH composite at elevated temperatures.
By raising the proportion of FeOOH in the SR material researchers have achieved better fire resistance and thermal endurance while also effectively reducing smoke output. The incorporation of FeOOH leads to enhanced thermal and flame retardancy because it promotes the development of a dense carbon layer which reduces heat release and smoke production.

Nano-Ferric Hydroxide (FeOOH) Surface Modification Improves the Flame Retardancy of Flexible Polyurethane Foam

The hydrothermal method produced modified flexible polyurethane foam FPU/FeOOH from raw materials ferric chloride hexahydrate and urea. The characterization of FPU/FeOOH foams involved X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Contact angle (CA) analysis.
Key findings
· Analysis demonstrated that the FPU foam surfaces displayed uniform dispersion of abundant FeOOH nanoparticles.
· The integration of FeOOH into FPU foams substantially increased their hydrophobic and oleophilic properties and enabled the foams to reach an adsorption capacity of 44 times their weight for various oil products and organic solvents.
· The treated FPU foams maintained exceptional stability and reusability.
· The flammability of FPU/FeOOH foams underwent assessment through cone calorimeter testing (CCT) and direct combustion testing which showed substantial reductions in peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR), and total smoke production (TSP) demonstrating the FeOOH nanoparticles greatly enhanced FPU foams flame retardancy.
