Study on the Role of Polydimethylsiloxane in Intumescent Flame-Retardant Polypropylene

This research investigates how polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) affects intumescent flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) that contains melamine phosphate (MP).
· Evaluation Methods
The study used analytical methods including limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 test to analyze samples through thermogravimetric analysis (TG) as well as real-time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and pyrolysis/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS).
· Sample Preparation
Samples were prepared using a two-roll mill at a temperature of 180-185 °C for 15 minutes. Following this mixing process, the samples were hot-pressed at approximately 185 °C and a pressure of 10 MPa for 5 minutes to create sheets of appropriate thickness and size for analysis.
· Impact of PDMS on Composites
It was found that replacing 30% of PP with PDMS in PP/MP composites leads to a slight reduction in the LOI while improving the UL-94 rating of the composites. The inclusion of PDMS enhanced the water resistance of the PP/MP/PDMS composites. TG and RTFTIR analyses demonstrated significant improvements in the thermal and thermal oxidative stability of the PP/MP/PDMS materials compared to the PP/MP composites. Additionally, Py-GC/MS results indicated that PDMS within the PP/MP composites undergoes pyrolysis at a lower temperature than itself.

Flame Retardant Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites

A new polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite film containing oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) dispersed using surfactants was designed and characterized for flame retardant applications.
· Sample Preparation
To prepare the sample, 2 wt% of MWCNT-COOH was combined with a liquid surfactant in a 1:1 ratio, yielding a total of 2 wt%. This mixture was then blended with base PDMS (Part A) and processed using a three-roll mill. Following this, the solution was mixed with a curing agent (Part B) and spin-coated at 640 rpm. The coated films were subsequently annealed in a muffle furnace at 120°C for 20 minutes in air, resulting in the final PDMS nanocomposite films. The samples produced include PDMS, PDMS/surfactant (PS), PDMS/MWCNT-COOH (PM), and PDMS/Surfactant/MWCNT-COOH (PSM).
· Properties of PSM Composite
The PDMS/surfactant/MWCNT-COOH (PSM) nanocomposite exhibited enhanced flame retardant properties compared to composites containing only surfactant or MWCNT-COOH. The peak heat release rate, peak smoke production rate, total smoke release rate, as well as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions from PSM were 42%, 47%, 18%, 28%, and 47% lower, respectively, than the PDMS control samples. The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) for PSM was measured at 32%, compared to 25% for PDMS. PSM effectively reduces smoke emission and restricts air penetration that reacts with the material's gas volatiles.
