Polyurethane (PU) is a versatile material with enormous industrial potential. However, it is inherently flammable and will burn when exposed to fire. Once on fire, the combustion process will be very rapid, which generates a large amount of toxic fumes and gases, resulting in serious casualties and property damage. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the fire retardancy of PU materials to broaden their practical applications.
Alfa Chemistry offers composite flame retardant for PU, which belongs to the nitrogen-phosphorus composite system. After adding this product, the PU coating will foam and expand to form a porous carbon layer on the surface of the coating when it is thermally cracked or burned, which can play the role of heat insulation, oxygen insulation, flame retardant and prevent the production of molten droplets. When decomposing, the flame retardant can also produce a large number of non-combustible gases to dilute the oxygen concentration around the combustible material, which plays a good synergistic effect with the carbon layer formed during combustion to achieve the flame retardant effect.
