Multicomponent Flame Retardant System with Melamine Polyphosphate in Thermoplastic Polyurethane

This work investigated the synergistic performance of melamine polyphosphate (MPP) in combination with melamine cyanurate (MC) and aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi) as a multicomponent flame retardant system for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
Preparation: A systematic series of flame-retarded TPU samples was prepared with a constant total additive loading of 30 wt%. The ratio between MPP and MC was studied at fixed AlPi concentrations, followed by investigation of varying AlPi content (0-15 wt%) at the optimal MPP:MC ratio.
Key Results:
· The multicomponent flame retardant system demonstrated exceptional performance, with the optimal formulation of 8 wt% MPP, 12 wt% MC, and 10 wt% AlPi achieving V-0 classification and reducing peak heat release rate by 83% from 2660 kW/m2 to 452 kW/m2.
· The system showed significant synergistic effects in residue formation and heat combustion reduction while substantially improving mechanical properties - replacing 5% MC with MPP increased elongation at break from 293.7% to 373.4% and tensile strength from 16.7 to 23.2 kJ/m2.
· All flame retarded TPU formulations maintained V-0 classification, with performance plateauing slightly above 10 wt% AlPi concentrations, demonstrating the critical importance of component ratios in achieving both superior flame retardancy and enhanced mechanical properties.
