Decabromodiphenyl Ethane/Montmorillonite Synergistic Flame Retardant System for Polypropylene

Polypropylene/Decabromodiphenyl ethane/antimony trioxide/organic modified montmorillonite (PP/DBDPE/Sb2O3/OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending and their combustion performance, thermal stability and char layer morphology were characterized. The results show that the composites containing the modified mixture DBDPE/Sb2O3 can achieve better flame retardancy. In addition, the presence of DBDPE/Sb2O3 can improve the dispersion of OMMT in polypropylene, thereby improving thermal stability and increasing the char residue.
Preparation of the nanocomposites
· Flame retardant particles, including DBDPE, Sb2O3, and OMMT, along with processing additives, were pre-dried at 80°C for 12 hours in a circulating air oven.
· A silane coupling agent was mixed with ethanol in a 1:1 mass ratio. The dried flame retardants DBDPE and Sb2O3 were combined in a 4:1 ratio and thoroughly mixed. They were then surface-modified using various silane coupling agents-such as γ-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GTMS), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), and γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS)-at a concentration of 2 wt% based on the dry weight of the DBDPE/Sb2O3 blend, in a high-speed mixer for 30 minutes.
· After drying, the modified flame retardants were melt-compounded with polypropylene (PP) using a twin-screw extruder at temperatures between 170-180°C for 10-15 minutes. The resulting compounds were then ground into small pieces using a plastic powder pulverizer and molded into bars using an injection molding machine for fire properties testing.

Decabromodiphenylethane/Antimony Trioxide for Flame Retardant Modification of PP Composites

Decabromodiphenylethane and antimony trioxide (D-S; the mass ratio of DBDPE to Sb2O3 was 3:1) were introduced as flame retardants to improve the fire resistance of polypropylene/aramid fiber (PP/AF) composites. The results showed that the samples containing 30 wt % D-S and 20 wt % AF achieved V-0 in the UL-94 test. The maximum carbon residue of PP/D-S/AF was as high as 15.5%, which was 115% higher than that of PP/D-S.
Preparation of flame-retardant PP/AF composites
· To eliminate impurities, the AFs were first soaked in a 0.5 wt % sodium hydroxide solution for about 1 hour, followed by immersion in acetone for around 12 hours. They were then dried in an oven at 80°C for 12 hours. The clean, dried fibers were immersed in a 1 wt % phosphate coupling agent solution, mixed with ethanol and water in a 9:1 ratio, for 2 hours. After this, the fibers were dried in an oven at 110°C for 4 hours to create a strong chemical bond between the coupling agent and the AFs, enhancing compatibility with the PP chains.
· The dried, pelletized PP was melt-blended with the modified AFs, D-S, and other processing agents using a twin-screw extruder at temperatures between 160°C and 200°C, with a screw speed of 100 rpm. The mixture was then quenched in a water bath, cut into pellets, and dried in an oven at 80°C for 12 hours. Lastly, the pellets were processed into the desired shapes using a plastic injector at temperatures of 190-200°C for testing mechanical and flammability properties.
