Preparation and Performance Analysis of PET/ DiDOPO Conjugated Flame Retardant Composites

The PET/DiDOPO conjugated flame retardant composites were created by melt blending styrene bridged DOPO (DiDOPO) into polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
· Preparation of PET/ DiDOPO composites
The flame retardant DIDOPO and PET pellets underwent vacuum drying at 100°C and 130°C for 4 hours and were then mixed together at weight ratios of 0:100,7.5:92.5, 10:90, 12.5:87.5 and 15:85. The mixture undergoes extrusion through a twin-screw extruder followed by cutting. The temperature of each section of the extruder is: The extruder temperature settings were 180°C for zone I, 200°C for zone II, 230°C for zone III and IV, 240°C for zone V while the head was set to 242°C with screw speed at 250 r/min and feeding speed at 18 r/min. The pellets processed by extrusion and pelletizing underwent a baking process at 100°C for 4 hours followed by 130°C for another 4 hours. A micro-injection molding machine produced standard splines. Zone III operates at 246°C while Zone IV reaches 257°C alongside the head temperature which also stands at 257°C and injection temperature is set to 263°C with the template zone at 68°C.
· Performance of PET/ DiDOPO composites
The composite achieved a V-0 flame retardant grade with 12.5wt% DIDOPO concentration resulting in a LOI measurement that surpassed PET by 56.87%. TG-FTIR test results demonstrated that DIDOPO facilitates PET/DIDOPO material degradation and generates phosphorus-containing free radicals which extinguish flames thus decelerating combustion while primarily performing flame retardancy in the gas-phase.

DIDOPO/Montmorillonite Compounds Synergistically Enhance the Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resins

Phenylethyl-bridged DOPO derivatives (DiDOPO) were combined with organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and added to epoxy resins (EPs) to improve their flame retardancy.
Flame retardancy of EP/DiDOPO/OMMT composites
· The composite EP/DiDOPO3.5/OMMT3.5 achieved a V-0 rating in UL-94 testing with a LOI value of 32.2%. The presence of DiDOPO lowered the T5% of the EP composites by facilitating the formation of phosphorus-based compounds that catalyzed the decomposition of the EP matrix.
· Combustion test results demonstrated that the EP/DiDOPO systems exhibited outstanding flame retardancy. The CCT results indicated that the pHRR value for EP/DiDOPO3.5/OMMT3.5 was lower than that of EP/DiDOPO7 and DiDOPO/OMMT7.
· OMMT created a protective barrier and enhanced early self-extinguishing properties in flammability tests, as confirmed by SEM analysis. The mechanism of the flame-retardant OMMT was primarily physical and occurred on a macroscopic scale. When OMMT and DiDOPO were combined in the EP, OMMT provided a protective barrier in the condensed phase, while DiDOPO inhibited flames in the gaseous phase, leading to improved flame retardancy in the EP/DiDOPO/OMMT composite.
