Iron Oxide Modified Montmorillonite Flame Retardant for Polyvinyl Chloride

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) modified montmorillonite (MMT) was applied as a flame retardant to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and the flame retardancy, smoke suppression and thermal degradation behavior of the PVC composites were evaluated. The results showed that iron oxide modified MMT could reduce the heat release rate in flame retardant PVC, and during the combustion process, a denser char residue was formed on the surface of the sample containing Fe2O3-modified MMT. In addition, the sample with Fe2O3-modified MMT showed higher thermal stability than pure PVC.
Preparation procedure of PVC/MMT-Fe2O3 samples
· Modified MMT was created using Fe(NO3)3 through the following steps. First, 60.50 g of solid Fe(NO3)3 was dissolved in a suitable amount of distilled water, after which 50 g of MMT was added to the solution while stirring continuously for about 2 hours to form a slurry. This slurry was then washed twice with distilled water. Next, the mixture was dried for 2 hours at 120 °C and subsequently heated in a muffle furnace at 350 °C for 3 hours. The final product was then ground into a powder to obtain Fe2O3-modified MMT.
· The test specimens of PVC/MMT-Fe2O3 were prepared by melting and mixing PVC with DOP, a heat stabilizer, lubricant, a specified amount of flame retardant, and the Fe2O3-modified MMT. The mixture was then processed in a two-roll mill at 155-160 °C for 10 minutes, followed by compression at 160-170 °C to form sheets measuring 150 x 150 x 3 mm. The test specimens were cut from these molded sheets.

Synergistic Flame Retardancy of Nano-Fe2O3 and Aluminum Diethylphosphinate

The effects of the synergistic flame retardant system of nano-Fe2O3 and aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi) on the pyrolysis and flame retardancy of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) were studied. The results show that due to the complementary mechanism of action, the combination of 5 and 8 wt% AlPi and 2 wt% metal oxides achieved V-0 classification in the UL 94 test. Among them, AlPi mainly acts as a flame retardant in the gas phase by releasing diethylphosphinic acid, while a small amount of Fe2O3 promotes the formation of carbonaceous char in the condensed phase.
Preparation of PBT/AlPi/Fe2O3 composites
· All formulations contained 2 wt% nanometric iron oxide (Fe2O3). Aluminum phosphinate (AlPi) served as the flame retardant, with concentrations of 5 and 8 wt%.
· PBT was combined with AlPi and Fe2O3 through melt blending in a twin-screw extruder operating at a screw speed of 120 rpm. Prior to blending, PBT was dried in a vacuum oven at 363 K overnight.
· The materials produced were then compression-molded at 523 K for 5 minutes under a pressure of 100 bar to create specimens for combustion testing. A total of six formulations were produced, labeled as 5%Mat and 8%Mat based on the respective loading of the phosphinate.
